The Lighthouse Keeper's Room

A 15-minute sleep meditation for racing thoughts

0:00 / 15:00

Background

When your body is tired but your mind won't stop, this sleep meditation slows things down step by step – softening the body, giving your thoughts somewhere to rest and drifting into a quiet room at the top of a lighthouse while rain falls outside.

Settle into bed in whatever position feels easiest tonight.

You've had a long day. Your mind might still be running, even though your body is tired.

That's alright. You don't need to stop your thoughts. We'll just let them slow down, the way a train slows into a station.

Let the mattress hold your weight. All of it.

Let your head sink a little deeper into the pillow.

Your breath can stay just as it is. It knows what to do.

Let your forehead soften… as if someone had smoothed it with a warm hand.

Let the small muscles around your eyes go loose.

Let your jaw unclench. Let the tongue rest.

Let your shoulders melt down into the bed.

Feel your arms growing heavy… from the shoulders to the elbows… to the hands.

Let your chest rise and fall on its own.

Let your belly be soft and warm.

Let your legs grow heavy, like sand settling at the bottom of a jar of water.

And let your feet rest, completely still.

Now, imagine a lighthouse, standing on a quiet stretch of coast.

It's night. The sea is calm, and a soft rain is falling.

Inside, a narrow staircase winds up and up, and you climb it slowly, one step at a time.

At the top is a small round room. The keeper's room.

There's a low bed with thick wool blankets. A small lamp glowing amber. A kettle that's just finished warming.

The great lamp of the lighthouse turns quietly above you. A slow, steady sweep of light across the dark water.

Round… and round.

You sit on the edge of the bed and pull a blanket around your shoulders.

It smells of wool and salt and woodsmoke.

Rain taps on the round windows. Soft. Patient.

Out over the sea, the beam of light passes… and then the dark returns.

On the windowsill there is a small wooden box.

Any thought that's still busy… you can place it in the box.

Tomorrow's list. Today's conversation. The thing you forgot.

Lay each one in the box, and close the lid.

They'll keep. The lighthouse is watching over everything tonight.

You lie back on the bed. The blankets are heavy and warm.

The light turns overhead… slow… and steady.

The rain keeps falling.

The sea breathes in… and out… far below.

You don't need to listen to my voice any more.

Let it fade… into the rain.

The light turns.

The sea breathes.

Rest now.
