The Voice That Judges

A 7-minute self-compassion meditation for the inner critic

0:00 / 7:00

Background

That inner voice that says you're not doing enough, not good enough, always behind. This meditation doesn't fight it – it helps you hear it differently, and find a kinder voice alongside it.

Find a comfortable position, and let your eyes close if that feels right.

Take a slow breath in…

and let it go.

Let your body be heavy for a moment. There's nothing to get right here.

Most of us carry a voice inside that judges us.

It says things like, "You should have done better." "Everyone else manages." "What's wrong with you?"

Maybe you know that voice well.

Just for now, let it speak. Notice what it usually says to you.

Notice how it sounds. Is it loud, or quiet? Fast, or slow? Does it sound like anyone you know?

And notice where you feel it in your body. The chest, perhaps. The stomach. The throat.

Breathe out slowly, into that place.

Here is something worth knowing about this voice. In its own clumsy way, it's often trying to protect you.

It wants you to be safe. To be accepted. To not get hurt.

It just doesn't know a gentler way to say it.

You don't need to argue with it. You don't need to believe it either.

You can simply say, quietly, "I hear you."

Now, imagine someone who cares about you, sitting beside you. A friend, a grandparent, a teacher – or someone you imagine.

Someone who sees you clearly, and likes what they see.

Imagine they've just heard what the critic said.

What would they say to you instead?

Maybe something like, "You're doing the best you can." Or, "You're allowed to be tired." Or, "I'm glad you're here."

Let those words land. Even if part of you doesn't quite believe them yet.

If you like, you can place a hand on your chest, or on your cheek. Feel the warmth of your own hand.

And offer yourself a few words, silently. You might use these:

May I be kind to myself.

May I remember that I'm human.

May I give myself the patience I'd give a friend.

The critical voice may come back later today. That's alright. It's an old habit.

But now you know there is another voice too. And you can choose which one to listen to.

Take one more slow breath, and let it be gentle.

When you're ready, open your eyes, and carry a little of that kindness with you.
